Department of Production Engineering, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi

Department of Production Engineering, King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi was found along with the 'Thonburi Technical Institute' in 1960. In the early stage, the department named 'Metal' which was one of the four original departments (Civil, Electrical, Mechanical and Metal) of the college. Machining, foundry and welding technologies including manufacturing managements have been mainly taught in the program.
In 1961, there were 16 students enrolling the 3-year program and only 11 students graduated as the first batch. Later in 1965, the department was renamed to 'Manufacturing Technology' and extended the study time to be 5-year program.
In 1967 and 1971, the department name was renamed again to be 'Production Technology' and 'Production Engineering' respectively, while still focuses on the machining, metal casting, welding and sheet metal forming as the core expertise. Also in 1971, the 'Thonburi Technical College' had been renamed to 'King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Thonburi', and Production Engineering has been a part of the Department of Engineering offering a 5-year undergraduate program.
In 1992, the institute decided to reduce the study time of Bachelor's programs from 5 years to 4 years. In 1994, a branch of Production Engineering has been separated to be another department named 'Tools and Materials Engineering' which mainly focuses on the metal-forming technologies and material science and engineering.
In 2002, the department of Production Engineering found a major of Mechatronic Engineering in order to offer the high-technology machinery areas, such as robots, automation systems and CNC, where become more important currently.
Until now, the academic programs of the 'Production Engineering' at 'King Mongkut's University of Technology Thonburi' (changed from 'King Mongkut's Institute of Technology Thonburi' in 1998) still bases on the fundamental and advanced theories along with the real hand-on practices in the original cores of manufacturing processes and related fields.
